Trading card legal educator

Most legal problems in this hobby can be avoided. My job is to help you see them coming.

“I read contracts for a living. In this hobby, I've watched people sign deals they didn't understand, run breaks without knowing the rules, consign cards on a handshake, buy fakes with no way back, and get blindsided at tax time. I started Card Counsel so collectors, shops, breakers, and creators can see those problems coming.”Jake Dippold, Founder

CARD COUNSEL
Read this first

I'm a lawyer. I'm not your lawyer.

Card Counsel is education and general guidance. I'll teach you the rules, show you what to watch for, and help you ask better questions. When you need someone in your corner on a real legal matter, you should hire an attorney licensed where you are, and I'm happy to tell you what kind to look for.

What I do

  • Teach the legal issues that come up in the card world
  • Talk through general questions and point out what to watch for
  • Run sessions and trainings for companies and their teams, on Zoom or in person
  • Help you figure out when it's time to hire your own attorney

What I don't do

  • Represent you or your company
  • Draft, negotiate, or sign off on your contracts
  • Give advice on your specific legal situation
  • Take on disputes, lawsuits, or claims
Nothing you send me, and nothing we talk about, creates an attorney-client relationship. Card Counsel is operated by North Point Consulting Group, LLC.
Sessions & trainings

Ways we can work together

Every session is built around one goal: keeping the people in this hobby from getting burned. Sessions can happen over Zoom from anywhere, or in person.

In-person sessions are available when travel expenses are covered. Whether in person makes sense depends on the group, its size, and the format, so mention it when you reach out.

Sessions for Card Companies

A working session for the people making decisions. You send a short list of general topics ahead of time, and we spend the call on how the law treats businesses like yours, where companies your size usually get exposed, and which habits keep you out of trouble.

  • Plain-English notes to share with your team
45–60 min · Zoom or in person · Whole team or by role

Breaks sit close to gambling, lottery, and sweepstakes laws, and those laws change from state to state. Platforms add their own rules on top. You'll learn how the law tends to look at different break formats, so you can make informed choices about how you run yours.

Before-You-Sign Talk-Through

Sponsorships, consignment deals, and partnerships usually arrive with a deadline and a lot of fine print. We go over how deals like yours are usually built, the clauses that hurt people most, and what's normal to push back on. I won't review your contract as your lawyer, but you'll walk in knowing what to ask.

What we cover

We cover

  • Exclusivity, usage rights, and content ownership
  • Payment terms and what happens if they don't pay
  • Termination clauses and getting out of a bad deal

Passing It On: Estate Planning for Collectors

A collection can take decades to build and a weekend to lose. Too often, families don't know what they have, sell it to the first buyer who makes an offer, or get hit with taxes nobody saw coming. This session covers the general ideas every serious collector should think about so their collection ends up where they want it. It's general education, not state-specific planning, and I'm not your estate attorney or tax advisor. You'll leave ready to have a much better conversation with yours.

What we cover

We cover

  • Building an inventory your family can actually use
  • Documenting value, grades, receipts, and provenance
  • Who gets access to vaults, safes, and online accounts
  • Gifting, selling, or leaving cards to family: the general trade-offs
  • How collectibles are generally taxed, and why the timing of a sale matters
  • Insurance, appraisals, and donating cards to charity

You walk away with

  • A collection inventory and instruction-letter checklist
  • A plan to keep your family from selling for pennies on the dollar
  • A list of questions for your estate planning attorney and CPA

Jake Dippold, attorney and founder of Card Counsel
About Jake

Most of the hobby runs on handshakes. Some of them shouldn't.

Cards were part of my life long before law school. Baseball cards are how I fell in love with the game as a kid, and that love carried me all the way to pitching Division I at Wofford College. When I came back to the hobby as an adult, it looked completely different. Six-figure sales, live breaks, consignment houses, and creator deals were everywhere, and almost nobody was talking about the contracts, the licensing, or the risk sitting underneath all of it.

I watched collectors send money to strangers with nothing in writing. I watched shop owners take consignments on a handshake and creators sign sponsorships without reading past the first page. Most of the time, people only started asking questions after something went wrong, when their options were already limited. Card Counsel exists to get that information to people before they need it.

My practice is business law: contracts, negotiation, entity structure, and protecting people from agreements they didn't fully understand. I'm also an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina Sumter, so every semester I explain complicated material to people who would rather be anywhere else. I've learned how to make it stick.

Common questions

Before you reach out

Still not sure if Card Counsel is the right fit? Start here.

Are you my lawyer if we do a session?

No. Sessions, trainings, videos, and questions are all education and general guidance. No attorney-client relationship is formed. If you need representation, hire an attorney licensed in your state.

Can you look over my contract?

Not as your lawyer. In a Before-You-Sign Talk-Through, we go over how deals like yours are usually structured and which terms to pay attention to, so you can have a better conversation with your own attorney.

Do you do sessions in person?

Yes. Any session can happen over Zoom from anywhere, or in person when travel expenses are covered. Whether in person makes sense depends on the group, its size, and the format. Mention it in your request and we'll figure out what works best.

What does a session cost?

It depends on the format, group size, and length. Send a request through the form below and I'll reply with options and pricing.

Will you answer my question in a video?

Maybe. Good general questions often turn into videos. Your name stays private unless you tell me otherwise, and you should never send confidential details through the question form.

What if I already have a legal problem?

Talk to an attorney licensed where you are as soon as possible, because deadlines can matter. If you're not sure what kind of attorney you need, reach out and I can point you in the right direction.
